Appointment of Dr. Khoshnevis to the Louise L. Dunn Endowed Professorship in Engineering at USC

We are very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis to the Louise L. Dunn Professorship, at USC. This appointment recognizes Berok’s exceptional distinction as a Professor in the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. As is the process in all such honors, the appointment was recommended by an appropriate faculty committee and approved by the Provost.

Berok Khoshnevis is currently Dean’s Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering, with courtesy appointments in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, and Civil and Environmental Engineering.  He has numerous inventions in different technology domains and over 100 US and international patents and nearly 200 refereed technical publications. He has pioneered the field of large-scale 3D printing by the invention of the Contour Crafting® technology, which has resulted in the creation of an entirely new industry in construction. His creation of the SIS family of 3D printing technologies for polymeric and metallic part fabrication has also generated meso-scale 3D printing technologies that have been licensed by HP.

For his remarkable achievements, Berok has been inducted in National Academy of Inventors, he is Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, of the Institute of Industrial & Systems Engineering, and of the Society for Computer Simulation, as well as a NASA Innovative Advanced Concept Fellow. He has won numerous awards including the Khwarizmi International Award (KIA Laureate), the USC Viterbi School of Engineering Senior Research award, the Pete Lohman Best Engineering Alumni award, and a Sharif University of Technology One of Top 50 (among ~50,000) Alumni Award. He was recognized in 2017 by the Connected World magazine as one of top 10 pioneers in the Internet of Things (IoT), joining, for example, Elon Musk as another IoT pioneer.

Contour Crafting® invention received the 2014 Grand Prize among 1000+ globally competing technologies in the Create the Future design contest, organized by NASA Tech Briefs Media Group. It was selected earlier as one of the top 25 out of more than 4000 candidate inventions by the History Channel Modern Marvels program and the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame. It has been identified as one of the major disruptive technologies by renowned Professor Clayton Christensen.

Dr. Khoshnevis’ most recent 3D printing invention, Selective Separation Shaping (SSS), won another international competition Grand Prize by NASA in 2016 as the most capable and versatile metallic and ceramic Additive Manufacturing technology for micro-gravity and planetary applications.

Berok routinely conducts lectures and seminars and gives keynote speeches on invention. His TEDx talk on the subject of automated construction has been viewed more than one million times and was selected by the TED organization as one of five TEDx Moments among over 30,000 TED presentations.

In 2017 Dr. Khoshnevis founded Contour Crafting Corporation, a USC technology spinoff, with major investment by a leading multinational European construction technology company (Umdasch Group). CC Corp received the Golden Ticket Award from Dubai Municipality Future Accelerator in 2017, and the so-called “Business Oscar Award” from the Austrian Consulate in 2018.
